The portal crane is characterised by its gantry-shaped base structure, beneath which trucks or trains can pass. It comprises the hoisting mechanism, luffing mechanism, slewing mechanism, travel mechanism, and steel structure. The hoist and luff motions can be operated in tandem for an efficient duty cycle. Full 360° slewing covers the entire quayside working area. Luffing is driven by rack-and-pinion or screw drive for accurate positioning. All motions employ variable-frequency drives for smooth, energy-efficient operation.
